We’re at the halfway point of the FHSAA state wrestling championships and the big news so far today is that a local wrestler has pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament so far.
Jensen Beach senior Anthony Hess upset top-seeded and defending state champion Zack Mastro of Naples-Palmetto Ridge in the Class 1A 145-pound division. The win advances Hess to tonight’s semifinals.
Fran O’Brien of Benjamin is in the opposite half of the bracket as Hess and also won his quarterfinal match today. Should O’Brien and Hess each win their semifinal matches tonight, they will meet for the gold medal Saturday night at The Lakeland Center’s George Jenkins Arena.
That would be something if we get an all-Palm Beach County matchup in the finals.
Other local wrestlers advancing to tonight’s semifinal round in the championship bracket are Jupiter Christian teammates Tommy Bennett, Tucker Raich, George Bancroft and Carter Downs. T. J. Strunk of Benjamin also advanced with a win earlier today. They all are in the Class 1A tournament.
Paul Ostrazewski of Santaluces also has advanced to the semifinals of the Class 3A heavyweight division.
Ashton Griffin of Lake Worth and Dwayne Jackson of Palm Beach Central, the last remaining unbeaten wrestlers from the area, lost for the first time this season when they were defeated in the quarterfinal round today.
