Glades Central QB Kentavious McCoy misses opening practice

By Jason Lieser

Glades Central senior quarterback Kentavious McCoy was absent from the team’s first official practice this morning, and his status remains in jeopardy for the 2008 season.

McCoy, a senior, was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon last month, but Raiders coach Jessie Hester was surprised he didn’t show up for practice. Hester said team and school staff are reaching out to McCoy, and he is welcome ro practice until his legal issue is resolved.

Once a final judgment is made in relation to his charges, Hester will determine McCoy’s future with the team.

McCoy saw significant action at quarterback last year, when Glades Central used three different passers, but was behind junior L.J. Thomas in competition for this year’s starting job. Hester said the job is open — with as many as four players in the mix — but Thomas started the spring game and dazzled with five touchdown passes in three quarters.
