BB’s Orange done for year

By Jason Lieser

Boynton Beach offensive tackle Handell Orange, one of the county’s top recruits at his position, is out for the year with a torn ACL in his left knee.

Orange injured himself making a downfield block in Boynton Beach’s 22-0 win over Santaluces in the season opener, two weeks ago.

“He just stepped wrong and heard it snap,” Boynton Beach coach Rick Swain said.

The Tigers (1-0) were off last week and head to Vero Beach for a big test tomorrow. Swain said Orange is one of the best offensive linemen he has ever coached, and it will be a big loss for a team that many see as a rising threat.

Orange is 6-4, 3-5 pounds and has been recruited by several Division I programs, including Georgia Tech, Central Florida and South Florida. Swain had hoped Orange would continue to draw interest from big schools, but said the injury certainly will hamper his recruiting potential.

“It’s definitely going to affect it because some people won’t recruit a guy that’s been injured,” Swain said. “But if they’re smart … with rehab and proper surgery, he should be fine.”

Swain said Georgia Tech still wants Orange to come for a visit, and UCF “hasn’t backed off.” He anticipates an eight-month recovery process.
