Athletic directors and coaches around the area have been anxiously awaiting today’s FHSAA Board of Directors vote. The board voted in favor of a reclassification format that could affect many teams in this area.
This alignment is preliminary and was predicated on last year’s enrollment figures statewide, so this is not final. The FHSAA still awaits enrollment numbers from schools that have not submitted them. The Post has obtained current enrollment numbers from many schools in this area and factored them into the new policy, so this list is more accurate than what you might find elsewhere.
Teams will tentatively be placed in districts Dec. 12, and then schools will be able to appeal their classification and district.
If this plan holds firm, the most significant movers would be: Dwyer (down), Glades Central (down), King’s Academy (down), Royal Palm Beach (down), Atlantic (up), Seminole Ridge (down) and Glades Day (down). Bear in mind that this plan would create nine-team districts in the big classes, with the top four making the post-season. In smaller classes, the post-season system remains essentially the same.
In the big classes (6A down to 3A), if a team is required to play every team in the district, that leaves only two non-district games. That could eliminate some intriguing annual matchups, but the new system is likely to spawn new rivalries, too.
This will affect all sports, but as far as football is concerned, this is what the proposal could produce in this area:
Atlantic (up from 5A)
Palm Beach Central
Palm Beach Gardens
Boca Raton (up from 4A)
Royal Palm Beach (down from 6A)
Seminole Ridge (down from 6A)
West Boca Raton (up from 4A)
John I. Leonard
Palm Beach Lakes (down from 6A)
Wellington (down from 6A)
South Fork (down from 5A)
Lake Worth (down from 6A)
Port St. Lucie (down from 5A)
Dwyer (down from 4A)
Boynton Beach (down from 4A)
Fort Pierce Westwood (down from 4A)
Fort Pierce Central (down from 4A)
Jensen Beach (down from 4A)
Olympic Heights (down from 4A)
Glades Central (down from 3A)
Suncoast (down from 3A)
Inlet Grove (down from 2A)
St. Andrew’s (down from 2A)
Cardinal Newman (down from 2A)
King’s Academy (down from 2B)
Pope John Paul II (down from 2A)
John Carroll (down from 2B)
Glades Day (down from 1A)
Berean Christian (if it joins — currently independent)
