Royal Palm Beach girls get boost from upset of Lakes

By Jason Lieser

Just when it looked like No. 8 Royal Palm Beach might have been slipping, the Wildcats stormed back with a 54-51 upset win over No. 2 Palm Beach Lakes Monday night.

Coach Anthony Dangerfield said Royal Palm Beach hadn’t beaten Lakes in the five years he’s been at the school and he didn’t think the Wildcats beat them in the five or so years before that either so this was probably a program first too.

Royal Palm now sits at No. 2 in District 9-Class 6A in the mad scramble for seeding. Gardens is still No. 1.

Royal Palm led for the majority of the game and there was a nasty head-to-head collision between Amber Ford and Lakes’ Sasha Lawrence early in the third quarter that interrupted a 7-0 run by Lakes. Dangerfield said there was a 15-minute delay to clean up the mess and both girls returned in the fourth quarter.

Royal Palm’s Latoya Harvin had 26 rebounds and four blocks in addition to leading the team in scoring with 13 points.

Dangerfield said his girls were really excited over the win but they have to refocus quickly with Lake Worth Christian and Dwyer coming up this week.
