Final football redistricting plan

By Jason Lieser

The final official football districts for 2009 were announced Friday. Calling this plan a train wreck would be flattery.

There will be five three-team districts in this area, meaning several teams really only need to win one game to make the playoffs. Write it down right now: somebody from this area is making the playoffs next season at 3-7 or worse. Additionally, a three-team district could keep a team out that goes 8-2 or even 9-1.

The top two teams in each district make the post-season.

At first I wondered why they redistrict every two years instead of every four — seems like too much work too often — but after looking at the way the FHSAA botched this, it’s a good thing it’s only in place for two seasons.

Aside from that, there are a few good match-ups created by this format. Jupiter should be playing Gardens and Treasure Coast every year anyway. Atlantic and Boca Raton will continue their recent rivalry (Atlantic won 9-7 on opening night last year), and the Bobcats also will face Park Vista. Glades Day vs. Jupiter Christian should be a quality small-schools match-up each of the next two years.

Here is the finalized plan:
