South Dakota lands QB Tyler Wilhelm

By Jason Lieser

Seminole Ridge quarterback Tyler Wilhelm, a finalist for the Lou Groza Player of the Year award in 2008, verbally committed to South Dakota.

Wilhelm fought back from two fractures in his collarbone during his junior season, which typically is when quarterbacks get the most attention from colleges, and was one of the top passers in Palm Beach County last year.

He initially drew interest from Central Florida, Air Force and Tulsa before agreeing to an offer from South Dakota (Division I-AA). Seminole Ridge coach Matt Dickmann and some opposing coaches expressed surprise that Wilhelm was not more heavily recruited given his arm strength and size (6-4, 205).

He was an honorable mention selection for the 2008 all-area team.
