With FSU out, Byrd looks solid for N.C. State

By Jason Lieser

When Florida State made an offer to Pahokee defensive back Jarvis Byrd, his verbal commitment to North Carolina State looked questionable. Even Byrd admitted he was considering jumping to the Seminoles.

That offer does not exist.

Blue Devils coach Blaze Thompson said the FSU offer no longer is on the table, which should curb speculation that Byrd’s commitment to N.C. State is “soft.”

Byrd’s other offers include Wake Forest, Troy and Florida Atlantic. At this point, it looks like none of those schools will supplant N.C. State as his top choice before national signing day, next Wednesday.

One of the best cover corners in the area in 2008, Byrd had 39 tackles and helped the Blue Devils hold opponents under 65 passing yards per game on their way to a state championship. He is 6-0, 175 and was named all-area and all-state.

In other Pahokee recruiting news…

– Florida coach Urban Meyer was expected on campus Tuesday to visit verbal commit Nu’Keese Richardson. Richardson originally expected to be enrolled at UF by now, but instead will have to wait until the summer.

– Defensive back Willie Hickman, one of the fastest players on the team, has an offer from FAU, and other schools could be jumping into the mix in the final week. Minnesota, Marshall and Eastern Michigan have shown interest.

– Southern Mississippi had a presence at Pahokee on Tuesday, looking into the possibility of landing offensive lineman Donald Hester and wide receiver Dexter Holmes. It is unclear whether either player would be eligible to enroll.
