No host for Boys Volleyball championship

By Jason Lieser

The state championship for boys volleyball is eight weeks away and the FHSAA still has not named a site for this year’s semifinals and championship.

Because this event is not as big of a money-maker as football or basketball, it has had a nomadic existence since the inaugural state tournament in 2003. That season’s final was held at Royal Palm Beach High School.

The finals moved to FIU for the 2004 and ’05 seasons, then to Orlando-Timber Creek High School the next two years. Last season’s championship weekend was at Parkland-Douglas.

Douglas athletic director Dave Grad said his school requested to host again this year but the state still is open to other bids. The FHSAA said Monday it planned to release a statement addressing this topic later this week.

It’s surprising that more schools don’t jump into the mix. This is a two-day event that is relatively low maintenance compared to other championships, and if a school has a championship-calibre volleyball team, the administration could help them out by trying to give them home matches for the semifinals and finals.
