Royal Palm Beach coaches on the hot seat

By Jason Lieser

There’s new sheriff in town. Well, more like a new principal at Royal Palm Beach and he’s taking a close look at the athletic program.

Guarn Sims is in his first year as Royal Palm Beach’s principal and one of his priorities has been examining each team to make sure they are operating at his standards.

Softball coach Staci Gould has already been let go 13 games into the season and there might be more of that in other sports if a program is not up to par. Sims said there was not one incident that led to Gould being relieved of her duties. He just thought it was a good time to go in another direction.

Over the winter break when a Royal Palm Beach girls basketball player was ejected for punching an opposing player in a Fort Myers holiday tournament, Sims yanked the Wildcats from the tournament when they were scheduled to play another game. The FHSAA cited Sims’ quick action in preventing a much heftier punishment for the team, which was already on administrative probation stemming from a brawl a couple of years ago. The Wildcats were fined $500 and put on restrictive probation until the end of next season.
