All-state, all-area OL Tony Kibler transfers to Glades Day

By Jason Lieser

Tony Kibler, a massive offensive lineman with major college scholarship offers, transferred from Okeechobee to Glades Day this year and will play for the Gators as a senior, both schools confirmed.

Kibler (6-6, 315) was an all-area and all-state right tackle last year for the Brahmans, and began contemplating a transfer when Okeechobee coach Chris Branham resigned.

“It’s not a shot on me because I wasn’t hired when it happened,” new coach Jeremy Beckham said. “It’s a family decision.”

Kibler, a junior, has scholarship offers from Arkansas, South Florida and Georgia Southern. He also has drawn substantial interest from Florida State and Auburn, and should be the most highly recruited Glades Day player this year.

Gators coach Pete Walker said he was informed of the transfer around Christmas time and has been thoroughly impressed by Kibler since he arrived in Belle Glade.

“If you saw him running, you’d say, ‘My gosh, I can’t believe a guy that size moves that fast,’” Walker said. “He always did a good job against us.

“That was a nice Christmas present. When Branham stepped down, they were looking for somewhere else for him to go.”

Okeechobee beat Glades Day each of the past two years. The schools are not scheduled to meet in 2009.

Walker added that Kibler’s mother works in Belle Glade, which was another factor behind his transfer.
