Five suspended Trinity Christian players could miss 1A finals

By Jason Lieser

In the third inning of Friday’s Game 2 between Trinity Christian and Brito Miami Private, a bench-clearing fight resulted in the ejection of five players from each team.

Brito won that game 14-8 in 10 innings to force a Game 3, which was played without those 10 players.

Along with five Brito players, Trinity Christian starters Jacob Johnson, Richard Bain, Brandon Murray, Adaric Kelly and Jonathan Groezinger were ejected from Game 2 on Friday. Johnson is the team’s No. 1 pitcher, and Groezinger originally was scheduled to start on the mound Saturday.

The Florida High School Athletic Association has a standard two-game penalty for ejections, which would keep Trinity Christian’s five players out of Wednesday’s state semifinal game, but an FHSAA spokesperson said the situation is under review and the suspensions have not been determined.

If any player’s suspension is extended to three games or more, it would preclude him from a potential Class 1A state championship game Thursday.
