Jensen Beach football turns to Lance Jenkins

By Jason Lieser

The Jensen Beach Falcons have hired their fourth coach in the past six seasons. Out of 71 applicants for the job, the Falcons picked Lance Jenkins.

Jenkins has been out of coaching since a one-year stint at Merritt Island in 2006, where he played while in high school.

“We liked his energy level and his enthusiasm to lead and train our kids,” Jensen Beach athletic director R.J. Costello said. “He has that drive to be successful, that whatever-it-takes attitude.”

Costello also said Jenkins will be on campus next week to meet with assistant coaches and begin setting his staff for the 2009 season. Costello is optimistic the four on-campus assistant coaches will remain with the team.

He is also hopeful Jensen Beach has found a long-term solution for its football program. The last coach, Floyd Graham, resigned last month to take the same position at Tampa-Steinbrenner after one season as Falcons head coach.

“We’re always hopeful,” Costello said. “Hopefully Lance can stay with the program and get it on the right track. We’re definitely looking for some stability here.”

The Falcons went 4-6 in 2008 and did not make the playoffs.
