Atlantic coach: James Louis commits to Gators

By Jason Lieser

No surprise here: Atlantic coach Andre Thaddies said star wide receiver James Louis gave the Florida Gators a verbal commitment.

Louis has been saying for months the Gators were his leading choice, but wanted to explore his other options thoroughly before giving his word.

“He had never been anywhere else and he wanted to make sure that was the spot,” Thaddies said. “I’m happy for him.”

Louis was unavailable for comment Wednesday morning.

Louis (6-0, 185) runs the 40-yard dash in 4.45 seconds and is ranked No. 6 on the Big Board. As a junior, he was second in the area with 846 receiving yards, caught 43 passes and scored eight touchdowns to make the all-area team. He is also committed to play in the 2010 Under Armour All-American Game.

Louis is the area’s third rising senior to commit to the Gators, joining Dwyer’s Matt Elam and Gerald Christian. Those three players all are in the top six among local recruits.

He is also the third Atlantic player to pick a college. Quarterback Mark Leal committed to Virginia Tech and running back Donnell Kirkwood chose Minnesota.

All of these commitments are non-binding. Florida is recruiting a lot of receivers this year and Louis is free to change his mind until he actually signs paperwork in February.

Our UF writer Ben Volin speculates that this could end the Gators’ hopes of landing Pahokee receiver Chris Dunkley, but I think Dunkley was already losing interest before Louis committed. Ben also has a chart of UF’s current group of commitments, which is worth a look.
