First look at Pahokee’s new football stadium

By Jason Lieser

I was out in Pahokee earlier this month and went across the street from the school to survey the new stadium. It looks pretty nice so far, though it still doesn’t appear to have the seating capacity it will need for big games against Atlantic, Dwyer and Glades Central (the Raiders’ first visit will be the 2010 Muck Bowl).

The stadium was originally supposed to open with the Blue Devils’ kickoff class exhibition against Miami Northwestern, but that matchup was called off when both schools insisted on hosting the game. Pahokee coach Blaze Thompson wanted the game in Pahokee to showcase the new field and also had concerns about playing in Miami because his wife is expected to deliver their third child that week.

Anyway, the new facility will be named after Anquan Boldin, though the exact title has not yet been determined. Thompson expects it to be called “Anquan Boldin Stadium, Home of the Blue Devils.” The school has yet to name the fieldhouse and the practice field, but plans to do so before the season begins. Pahokee’s first official game at the stadium will be Sept. 4 against Atlantic.

New scoreboard in the north end zone (a major upgrade from what was one of the county's worst at Lair Field). There is also an electronic play clock at the south end zone.

The press box is still on the small side, but at least it is better than the old one. The box at Lair Field made my brother's tree house look like a mansion.
