Merrill Noel de-commits from Florida State, now heading to Wake Forest

By Jason Lieser

A month after he committed to Florida State, Pahokee cornerback Merrill Noel said he is going to join teammate Zachary Allen at Wake Forest.

Noel and Allen originally wanted to hold a joint press conference at the end of the spring session to announce they were both going to Wake Forest, but Noel wavered and later committed to the Seminoles.

After reconsidering, he is now back to Plan A.

“There was no problem with Florida State; (Wake Forest) just felt like a better place for me,” Noel said. “I felt much more comfortable at Wake. It’s a family environment. Everyone’s friendly. There’s never anything negative.”

Noel also said he committed to Florida State without much input from his family and regretted that misstep in the process.

He called his switch to Wake Forest “a final decision,” but that commitment is nonbinding and he is not locked in until he signs a national letter of intent in February.

Noel (5-10, 170) is ranked No. 15 on The Big Board, fourth among defensive backs.
