Royal Palm Beach fires Darren Studstill days before practices begin

By Jason Lieser

Royal Palm Beach fired head football coach Darren Studstill after one season on the job. Studstill was informed of the school’s decision early Tuesday afternoon and Athletic Director Steven Kaufmann said Frank Kunf will take over as head coach.

“My heart goes out to Darren; he’s a good guy,” said Kaufman, who declined further comment.

After eight years as an assistant coach, Studstill led Royal Palm Beach to an 11-2 record last season and the Wildcats lost to Orlando-Boone in the regional finals.

Principal Guarn Sims suspended Studstill and an assistant coach for Royal Palm Beach’s Oct. 24 game against Lake Worth after a dispute between the two, but Studstill’s first season was otherwise considered a success. He was a finalist for the Lou Groza Coach of the Year award last year.

His recent off-season was marked by the departure of star wide receiver Chris Dunkley, who transferred to Pahokee.

Kunf, who formerly coached at Olympic Heights and John I. Leonard, has taught at Royal Palm Beach since it opened. He also coached boys golf.

All Florida schools begin official practices Monday.
