After a long summer of deliberation, Santaluces basketball coach Willie Gibson said he intends to come back for his 28th season coaching the Chiefs.

Gibson, 58, guided Santaluces (25-4) to the state final four last season and contemplated retirement, but still has the passion for at least one more year.

“As of now, yes,” said Gibson, who did not rule out the possibility of stepping down before the season starts in November.

“Listening to friends and people who know me… it makes you think about it. If you love what you do, why give it up?”

Gibson has coached Santaluces’ basketball team since its inception in 1982. He finished last season with 496 career wins.

“The 500 wins, that’s a pretty good accomplishment,” he said. “Not a lot of coaches get to coach long enough to get there.”

The Chiefs will begin conditioning next month and official practices begin in early November.

Gibson and Athletic Director Bill Bretherick have said previously that assistant coach Reggie Dixon is the school’s coach-in-waiting if Gibson retires.
