After two teams scheduled kickoff classic pre-season games with Pahokee then withdrew, the Blue Devils finally have found a suitable opponent: themselves.
Pahokee coach Blaze Thompson said he is still open to the idea of playing another school if one comes forward, but at this point, the Blue Devils are planning a Blue-White scrimmage to christen their new stadium Aug. 28.
Thompson spoke with several schools last week, including Miami Southridge and Okeechobee, but was unable to get a commitment to play. The school also tried to schedule Treasure Coast, which was still looking for a game a few weeks ago, but the Titans had already agreed to play Lauderdale Lakes-Boyd Anderson at Lawnwood Stadium. The Blue Devils beat Boyd Anderson 14-13 in the spring game.
Pahokee was originally supposed to face fellow powerhouse Miami Northwestern, but both schools insisted on hosting. Thompson does not want to play on the road that week because his wife is expected to give birth to their third child that week.
After the Northwestern talks broke down, Brooksville-Nature Coast agreed to play in Pahokee for a kickoff classic, but coach Mark Lee later changed his mind.
Atlantic was looking for a game, but the Eagles play Pahokee to open the regular season the following week, so that was never an option. Atlantic has since scheduled a kickoff classic against Coconut Creek at Pompano Beach High School.
