Thursday Night Lights: Royal Palm Beach at Palm Beach Central

By Jason Lieser

The opening week of football in this area begins with one of the season’s best regional rivalries.

Palm Beach Central announced today it has moved the season-opening game against Royal Palm Beach to Thursday, Sept. 3.

Broncos Athletic Director Jeff Schwartz said the Palm Beach County school district was short one officiating crew for the first Friday of the season, so he volunteered the Broncos to play a day earlier.

“There were a lot of factors I liked,” Schwartz said. “We play Thursday the week before and it’s Labor Day weekend. We think it’s a decent match-up and if it’s the only game, some people will show up because their school’s not playing that night. It also gives us an extra day to prepare for Glades.”

The Broncos visit Glades Central the following Friday.

Schwartz said the school will prepare for an even larger crowd than it initially expected for the season opener.

The first Friday of the season features Atlantic at Pahokee and Glades Central at Dwyer. On Saturday, Sept. 5, Jupiter Christian plays American Heritage at Jensen Beach High School.

Treasure Coast and Fort Pierce Westwood initially scheduled their opener for Thursday, Sept. 3, but it has since been push back to Friday.
