Game within the game: Jared Dangerfield vs. Peniel Jean

By Jason Lieser

High school football kicks off tonight with a great regional rivalry game between No. 9 Royal Palm Beach and Palm Beach Central. Both teams are likely to lean more on the running game than the passing attack, especially the Broncos, but there is an intriguing match-up between Wildcats WR Jared Dangerfield and Palm Beach Central DB Peniel Jean.

Dangerfield (6-3, 172, No. 36 on The Big Board) is stepping into the role of No. 1 receiver, a position vacated by Chris Dunkley when he transferred to Pahokee. The Dunkley-Dangerfield combo would have been one of the area’s best, but Royal Palm Beach still has a good receiver corps. Look for sophomore Tremaine McCullough, who runs a 4.4 in the 40-yard dash, to develop into a viable option, too.

Dangerfield and Jean (5-11, 185, No. 27 on The Big Board) squared off last year and occasionally work out together during the off-season and at skills camps.

“Me and him are cool,” Jean said. “I’m used to playing with him. We’re both physical. I have more speed, but he’s a good route runner.”

If Dangerfield is able to break loose for a few catches, Jean has a knack for getting in position on tackles and limiting the damage.

Jean has a 33-inch vertical leap, but still might have trouble dealing with his height deficit against Dangerfield.

“That’s what I did at camps, that over-the-head jump ball,” Dangerfield said. “That’s an advantage I have and I’m going to use it.”
