Former Santaluces standout Darin Downs tells story of recovery after horrific injury

Darin Downs, who was a fifth-round draft pick of the Chicago Cubs out of Santaluces in 2003, was just profiled in the St. Petersburg Times. Downs, now in the Tampa Bay Rays’ organization, was on the mound when he was hit in the head with a 103-mph line drive last month while playing for the Class AA Montgomery (Ala.) Biscuits. Downs was at the Rays game Friday to accept the MVP award for Class A Port Charlotte.
