Dwyer senior Matt Elam, the area’s top football recruit, was wowed by his visit to Tennessee, but was it enough to supplant Florida or West Virginia on his list?
“I wouldn’t say it’s my new favorite, but it’s an option,” Elam said. “It was a great trip. I enjoyed myself and learned some new things.
Elam (6-0, 210, No. 1 on the Big Board), committed to the Florida Gators last fall, but it is hard to call him a UF commit with a straight face. Last week he sounded like a free agent and said if he had to pick right now, West Virginia would be his choice. He reiterated that preference today.
Elam will visit Florida State next weekend. He said he also is considering trips to Southern Cal, Texas and Virginia Tech. He does not plan to make an official visit to Gainesville because he said he has been there enough times to know how he feels about it.
As for his recent trip to see Lane Kiffin and the Volunteers, Elam said he was impressed by the way Tennessee uses current safety Eric Berry. Elam plays a variety of positions for Dwyer on both sides of the ball, but is projected to play safety in college.
“I talked to Monte Kiffin, and he made up the Cover 2 defense,” Elam said. “He puts safeties in position to make plays. He always puts Eric Berry in the right place.”
Elam, who plans to graduate at the end of this semester, said he will make his final college decision in November.
