Pope John Paul II following NFL’s lead on breast cancer awareness

By Jason Lieser

Pope John Paul II players will be wearing pink wristbands and shoelaces for Friday’s game against Benjamin.

The accessories (similar to what the NFL is doing with cleats, gloves, hats, etc…) are part of an overall fundraising drive the school hopes will pull in up to $1,000 in donations.

The school will be asking for an extra $1 contribution on top of the normal ticket price and will be selling pink Eagles t-shirts as part of the effort. Coach Chris Kokell said all proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.

I have heard a handful of players on other teams mention wanting to wear something pink to honor a friend or loved one who battled breast cancer, but this is the first team that has publicized an organized fundraiser. If other schools are doing something similar, please let me know.
