Barring some stunning upsets, three of the Post’s Top 10 – No. 1 Martin County, No. 2 Jensen Beach, and No. 3 Lake Worth Christian – should win their district tournaments.
After that, it’s anyone’s guess who will move on to the regional tournaments.
The biggie is 9-6A and if anyone follows girls basketball, this same scenario played out in the winter with a cluster of teams all fighting for two spots in the next round.
Jupiter, Boca Raton, Park Vista, and Royal Palm Beach all have a good shot at winning the district and it’s possible Palm Beach Central (which won the play-in game) could sneak in there.
Boca Raton, the south division’s top seed, is probably the favorite after winning its invitational two weekends ago by sweeping Park Vista and beating Royal Palm in four games. The Bobcats also beat Park Vista a week before that. Jupiter is the north division’s top seed.
This district of nine teams was split into north and south divisions when the FHSAA passed its schedule reduction policy, cutting volleyball schedules to 20 games. But when the policy was overturned, the district’s coaches decided to leave the divisions intact. Central opted to go in the south division.
The other district that will leave a good team out in the cold is 15-5A. That district features Spanish River, West Boca, and Wellington. After a loss to Lake Worth Christian to open the season, the Sharks have been pretty strong all season. West Boca has been an up and down team but has the talent to make it to the next round if it can put together a couple of strong matches. Wellington is young but had a great showing in the Palm Beach County Classic.
King’s Academy, Pope John Paul II, Benjamin, and John Carroll all advanced to the semifinals in 13-2A with wins on Monday.
