At various points in the past year, Sports Illustrated writer Austin Murphy has been in the area working on a feature about the annual Muck Bowl.
Murphy completed his piece earlier this month and it is running in the magazine this week. You can also find it online by clicking here.
I spoke with Murphy a few times while he was down here and he seemed impressed by the atmosphere at the game. Murphy is a good guy and does excellent work covering college football for SI.
I’ll give you a few lines from his piece, but I highly recommend reading the full article at SI.com:
–From Pahokee defensive coordinator Rick Lammons’ pre-game speech: “You do not call us out, then say there’s gonna be peace. These people asked for a goddam war! So guess what, fellas, we’re gonna give them a goddam war!”
–From Glades Central coach Jessie Hester’s halftime speech: “If you go out and execute and eliminate penalties, this game will not even be close.”
–On Pahokee’s underachievement: All season Pahokee had been less than the sum of its all-star parts. That flaw was on glaring display against Hollywood-Chaminade, which routed the three-time defending state champs 35–0.
–On Pahokee’s loyalty and lack of discipline: A disciplined team turns the other cheek. That’s not in the Blue Devils’ DNA. Part of their mystique is that they will fight at the drop of a hat.
–On Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin’s disparaging remarks about the town of Pahokee: Note to Kif: I purchased $25 of unleaded at Swifty’s on East Main Street in Pahokee—from a middle-aged gentleman wearing shoes and a shirt!
