Basketball: Former Miami star Lamar Thomas steps down as Boynton Beach coach

By Jason Lieser

Former University of Miami football standout and Miami Dolphins player Lamar Thomas resigned as Boynton Beach’s boys basketball coach for personal reasons, Athletic Director Rick Swain said.

Thomas, who is also an assistant coach on the football team, was in his second season with the Tigers.

“It’s a medical issue with his brother that he’s dealing with,” Swain said. “He’s been real stressed about it and he’s real involved in the situation. He talked to me about it and I told him I’d take over it.”

Thomas will continue to work at the school, where he assists the administration in disciplinary matters.

Swain is now the school’s head coach in basketball and football, its athletic director and teaches two classes. He won more than 400 games as a head basketball coach in Alachua County.

He said Thomas, one of his former players in both sports, had been doing an excellent job with the basketball team.

“The program was coming around,” Swain said. “We’ve got a lot of great young kids.”
