By Jason Lieser

Pope John Paul II junior Stephanie Schappert, a two-time state champion in cross country, finished third in the statewide voting for Runner of the Year.

The award, presented by the Florida Dairy Farmers and voted on by high school cross country coaches, went to Naples’ Kathryn Fluehr. Fluehr was followed by Shelby Hayes (Winter Park), and Carly Thomas (Tallahassee-Chiles) finished fourth.

Fluehr ran a 16:59 in the state championship meet, compared to Schappert’s 17:58.

The boys winner was Brian Atkinson from Melbourne. The runners-up, in order, were Matt Mizereck (Tallahassee-Leon), Patrick Swain (Tallahassee-Maclay) and Colin Barker (Jacksonville-Bishop Kenny). Atkinson won the Class 4A title this season with time of 15:20.
