Matt Elam back on speaking terms with Urban Meyer, but says he’s sticking with FSU

By Jason Lieser

Dwyer safety Matt Elam, the area’s No. 1 recruit, refused to take calls from University of Florida coach Urban Meyer last week, but the two spoke on the phone earlier today and reconciled some hurt feelings.

Despite his conversation with Meyer, Elam said he remains fully committed to Florida State. He switched from the Gators to FSU last week.

Meyer talked to Elam about re-committing — would that be a new word in the recruiting world? — but Elam said it is not an option.

“He tried but it didn’t work,” Elam said in a text message.

Elam committed to the Gators in October 2008 and seemed solid until the beginning of the 2009 season. He wavered at times last fall, but reaffirmed his commitment to Florida in mid-December.

Shortly after that, however, Meyer announced his resignation. The next day, Meyer said he would take a short leave of absence and planned on coaching the Gators in the 2010 season.

Elam did not completely believe Meyer and began thinking about Florida State and Georgia. He committed to the Seminoles on Thursday, but Dwyer coach Jack Daniels advised caution.

“I told the guys at Florida State, if you think you have him locked — I don’t know where Matt’s going to go until he sets foot on the campus,” Daniels said this week.

According to Elam, that stage of the process will occur Monday in Tallahassee.

Funny thing, though, is that he’ll have to drive right through Gainesville to get there. Wonder if he stops.
