WR Chris Dunkley will not enroll early at Florida

By Jason Lieser

Pahokee wide receiver Chris Dunkley said he graduated high school, but did not qualify to enroll early at the University of Florida.

Dunkley had planned to enroll in time for spring practices — joining Dwyer’s Matt Elam, Gerald Christian and Robert Clark — but now will have to wait an extra semester.

Dunkley committed to the Gators during the Under Armour All-American Game earlier this month and said Monday he still intends to finalize that decision on Feb. 3, which is national signing day.

Dunkley favored Florida throughout his recruitment and seemed like a lock for the Gators, but now he has a lot of time to reconsider.

“Anything can happen in three weeks,” Blue Devils coach Blaze Thompson said. “He’s been pretty solid with Florida the last three or four months, but you never know.”

Alabama also was a finalist to land Dunkley and could make a strong push to sway him before he signs.

When asked if he would change his mind over the next few weeks, Dunkley responded, “hopefully not.”

Former Pahokee player Nu’Keese Richardson was in a similar situation a year ago and switched his commitment from Florida to Tennessee on signing day. Richardson said afterward that if he had qualified to graduate early, he would have upheld his initial commitment to the Gators.
