Florida State has commitments from two Treasure Coast juniors

By Jason Lieser

I was incorrect when I wrote Monday that Park Vista’s Cody Preble was the first junior to commit. Florida State already had two juniors commit back in December.

Keelin Smith and Lamarcus Brutus, a pair of defensive backs from Treasure Coast, committed to the Seminoles in December, doing so even before FSU landed prized senior linebacker Jeff Luc last month.

“They just did it quietly,” Treasure Coast assistant coach Aaron Sheppard said.

There always is skepticism when juniors commit early (and there should be), but Sheppard said neither Smith nor Brutus will be taking other visits or considering other schools.

“They said they’re holding,” said Sheppard, who serves as the Titans’ recruiting czar. “I don’t let them commit unless they’re going to hold it. They said they’re happy and that’s where they want to be.”

But that’s what everyone always says. We’ll see.

Brutus (6-0 180) broke up 14 passes last season and made 43 tackles. Smith (6-3, 185) had 45 tackles and 16 pass break-ups. Sheppard said both players run the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds.
