Fred Pickett, Sr., shoots down report that son committed to Marshall

By Jason Lieser

Did Pahokee wide receiver Fred Pickett switch his commitment from West Virginia to Marshall?

The Herald-Dispatch (Huntington, W.Va.) wrote that Pickett committed to the Thundering Herd on a visit this weekend, but Pickett’s father, Fred, Sr., said that is incorrect.

“I talked to him and I didn’t hear anything about that,” Pickett, Sr., said Sunday. “He’s still got a couple more visits lined up.”

Pickett confirmed that his son is seriously considering Marshall now that Doc Holliday is the team’s head coach. Holliday was an assistant at West Virginia prior to taking that job and had a hand in landing several local players for the Mountaineers.

There was similar confusion last year regarding Pickett’s commitment to West Virginia. Two major recruiting websites said Pickett committed to the Mountaineers, but Pahokee coach Blaze Thompson rebutted the reports. Pickett (5-11, 170, No. 19 on The Big Board) did commit to West Virginia shortly after that.

All commitments are non-binding. No player is locked into a school until he signs a national letter of intent. The first day seniors can sign is Feb. 3, national signing day.
