By Jason Lieser

Joe Grosso will play football and get an Ivy League education.

Grosso, an all-area linebacker for Pope John Paul II, committed to play for the University of Pennsylvania.

“That was the decision, whether I want to go the Ivy route or the bigger Division I football route,” Grosso said. “Penn’s the best fit for me.”

Grosso (6-1, 215, No. 50 on The Big Board) also drew interest from Harvard and other Ivy League schools.

He had an offer from Marshall last spring, but was not interested.

Ivy League schools do not offer athletic scholarships, but qualifying athletes are admitted and given a spot on the football team.

As a senior for the Eagles, Grosso registered 103 tackles, eight sacks and three forced fumbles.

All commitments are non-binding. No player is locked into a school until he signs a national letter of intent. The first day seniors can sign is Feb. 3, national signing day.
