Royal Palm Beach WR Jared Dangerfield could be late signee

By Jason Lieser

A common misconception of national signing day is that it represents a deadline.

While most colleges do expect their recruits to sign Feb. 3, it is merely the first day they can do so. A high school player can wait as long as he wants and there have been several notable examples of players taking their time (Tennessee’s Bryce Brown, Ohio State’s Terrelle Pryor and Michigan’s Martavious Odoms, for example).

A few players from this year’s senior class have talked about waiting beyond national signing day and one of them is Royal Palm Beach wide receiver Jared Dangerfield.

At this point, the only solid offer Dangerfield has is from Southeast Missouri State. Other schools, however, have shown some interest lately and a spot could open up for Dangerfield if one of those programs suffers a late de-commitment or signing day surprise at receiver or in the secondary.

“I might wait and see what happens after that,” Dangerfield said. “I don’t want to rush into anything.”

Dangerfield (6-2, 180, No. 41 on The Big Board) said he has been talking with Marshall, West Virginia and Cincinnati. He has not visited any of those schools, though.

A program that signs him could have a hidden gem. Dangerfield has big hands (9 inches from the tip of his middle finger to the base of his wrist) and runs the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds.

He is only 17 years old, meaning he likely will continue to grow. If a college redshirts him, the team could be looking at an even more impressive physique by the time he’s ready to hit the field.

Despite playing a team that struggled offensively and had inconsistent quarterback play, Dangerfield caught 34 passes for 543 yards and four touchdowns as a senior.
