Steven Funderburk commits to Tulane

By Jason Lieser

In what could be one of the area’s biggest steals this year, the Tulane Green Wave got a commitment from Treasure Coast safety Steven Funderburk.

Titans assistant coach Aaron Sheppard, the team’s recruiting czar, said Funderburk committed earlier this week.

“The other schools wanted him to play linebacker and he gets a chance to play safety there,” Sheppard said. “He loves the environment and the academics. Steve’s an academic guy, so he jumped on that right away. He loved it.”

Funderburk (6-3, 190, No. 31 on The Big Board) had offers from several schools, including Louisville, Mississippi State and Kansas.

He had 69 tackles, including nine for loss, last season.

All commitments are non-binding. No player is locked into a school until he signs a national letter of intent. The first day seniors can sign is Feb. 3, national signing day.
