Finalists for Palm Beach County Sports Commission awards

The Palm Beach County Sports Commission will give out several awards next month, including amateur athlete of the year and high school athlete of the year.

Here are the finalists:

AMATEUR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Susan Cohn, Palm Beach Gardens, golf. Won the Palm Beach County Women’s Amateur Championship for the third straight year and sixth time since 2000.

Jacoby Ford, West Palm Beach, football and track. Won the NCAA title in the 60-meter indoors race and was the ACC champ in the 100-meter for Clemson. Also had 64 receptions for 824 yards and 7 touchdowns for the football team.

Janoris Jenkins, Pahokee, football. Had 24 solo tackles, 5 assisted tackles, 3 interceptions, and 1 forced fumble for Florida.

HIGH SCHOOL COACH OF THE YEAR

Jack Daniels, Dwyer football. Went 14-1, outscored opponents 243-42 during the playoffs and won the program’s first state title.

Jeff Goldberg, St. Andrew’s boy lacrosse. Led team to seventh straight state championships (two FHSAA, five club).

Jessie Hester, Glades Central football. Raiders went 13-1 last year and were state runners-up. Has never lost a regular-season game.

HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Matt Elam, Dwyer football. In 15 games, rushed for 1,898 yards, and 27 touchdowns on 178 carries as Dwyer won the 4A state championship. As a linebacker he made 80 tackles.

Hasani Sinclair, American Heritage soccer. Had 47 goals and 14 assists for 2A state champions.

Kelvin Taylor, Glades Day football. In 14 games, had 295 carries, 2,601 yards, and 49 touchdowns. Scored four touchdowns in Gators’ Class 1B championship victory.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Beth Daniel, Delray Beach, golf. Captain of the U.S. golf team that won the Solheim Cup. 1995 Palm Beach County Hall of Fame inductee.

Rudy Garbalosa, Lynn University, baseball. Coached the program to its best season ever, winning the NCAA Division II National Championship. Team went 46-16.

Richard Williams, tennis. Coaches Venus and Serena Williams, his daughters. Both made it to the 2009 Wimbledon finals. Serena went 50-12 and Venus went 38-16 in 2009.

Former Glades Central star Santonio Holmes, now with the Pittsburgh Steelers, was named Professional Athlete of the Year.

The Palm Beach County Hall of Fame also will induct 10 new members next month, including Hank Aaron (baseball), Fred Taylor (football) and Dottie Pepper (golf).

The PBCSC will give out its awards during the Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet March 21 at the Palm Beach County Convention Center.
