And then there were two (girls basketball teams left)

After last night’s region semifinals we’re down to two teams that are still alive – Trinity Christian and Jupiter, which move onto Saturday’s region finals. Unfortunately for the others that made it past the region quarters, they pretty much all ran into powerhouses. Lake Worth Christian lost to Hollywood Christian, American Heritage lost to Miramar Parkway Academy and St. Andrew’s lost to Plantation American Heritage (though that one was close). Berean Christian lost to Trinity but enjoyed its best season ever and Palm Beach Gardens lost to Jupiter, which was the only loss the Gators had to a Palm Beach County team all year.

Trinity Christian doesn’t want to look ahead, but I’ll gladly do that for them. You can’t look at that Class 1A bracket and not think the Warriors will end up playing Hollywood Christian in the state final. And that should be an amazing game, but before that they have to get through Tampa Cambridge. The state semifinal will have them against the winner of FAMU/Gainesville Rock if they beat Cambridge (probably a small “if”).

Jupiter will face South Broward, which won the state title in 2008. South Broward beat Jupiter by four points on Dec. 29 and that likely means Saturday’s rematch will be a good one. The Warriors played a great game Tuesday night when they beat Palm Beach Gardens, taking out a lot of the Gators’ best players and dominating the boards. Jupiter has to go to South Broward and if what I’ve seen of how a few girls basketball team draw south of the county line, it’ll be a tough place to play.
