Former Royal Palm Beach coach Darren Studstill to assist Suncoast

By Jason Lieser

Darren Studstill, who led Royal Palm Beach to its best season ever in his one year as head coach, has agreed to join Suncoast’s staff as an assistant.

“I need to be doing something,” Studstill said. “I’ve got to teach some guys how to win.”

He will coach under newly hired Chargers coach Micah Mays, a former Palm Beach Lakes quarterback. Studstill used to play quarterback for Palm Beach Gardens.

In 2008, Studstill guided Royal Palm Beach to an 11-2 record and an appearance in the state regional finals. He was a finalist for the Lou Groza Coach of the Year award for Palm Beach County.

Royal Palm Beach fired him the following May. Principal Guarn Sims said he dismissed Studstill because he did not meet expectations in off-field management. Multiple sources, including Studstill, said two of the issues in question were Studstill’s handling of finances and assistant coaches.
