American Heritage’s Sam Perretty, Steve Burgess win Class 2A soccer awards

By Jason Lieser

The one thing American Heritage goalie Sam Perretty said she wanted before she graduated was a state title. She got that in February, and today she picked up one of the most impressive individual honors in the state.

Perretty was voted the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 2A Player of the Year by the Florida media and now is a finalist for the all-classification Player of the Year award.

Her coach, Steve Burgess, won Class 2A Coach of the Year after winning his third state championship. He, like Perretty, is one of five candidates for the all-classification honor.

Perretty, who signed with Rutgers in February, allowed 0.58 goals per game during her senior season.

Perretty is up against four senior forwards for state Player of the Year: Palm Harbor University’s Catherine Brinkman, Melbourne’s Nicole DiPerna, Jacksonville-Bartram Trail’s Sam Scalf and Miami-Gulliver Prep’s Dara Spital.

In addition to Burgess, the following class winners are up for state Coach of the Year: Plantation-American Heritage’s Phil Zayas, Merritt Island’s Scott Carswell, Melbourne’s Rosanna Lord and Palm Harbor University’s John Planamenta.
