Glades Central coach Jessie Hester sees three good fits for WR Kelvin Benjamin

By Jason Lieser

Any college football program in the nation could find use for Glades Central WR Kelvin Benjamin, but his head coach said he needs to be careful about going to a school that thrives on a spread offense.

Although Benjamin said he has not started narrowing his list of possible destinations, Raiders coach Jessie Hester believes Alabama, Miami and Florida State are three of his best options.

“There’s some really good programs outside the state that suit his style, particularly Alabama and the pro set those guys run,” Hester said. “I like the University of Miami offense and Florida State as well. They have a real pro-type offense that will suit him really well.”

Benjamin (6-5, 215, No. 3 on The Big Board) has offers from the big three in-state schools and powerhouses around the country. Hester said several college football coaches have referred to him as “a program-changer.”

Because he is so highly coveted, it seems unlikely Benjamin will be pressured into an early commitment.

“There’s no rush or need for that,” Hester said. “The pressure the coaches may try to put on him is a smoke screen. If you tell that guy you want to come there a year later, that coach is going to welcome you with open arms.

“He has that type of talent. He’s in the driver’s seat. Most kids don’t have that card to play, but he most definitely does and he should take advantage of that.”

For his part, Benjamin seems to be patient about the process. He said he does not have a top-10 list and will probably wait until the summer to figure out his finalists.

He said he is considering Florida, Florida State and Miami and they are all equal at this point. He also plans to make an official visit to Southern Cal.

Navigating the recruiting process could be an overwhelming chore for Benjamin, who has only traveled outside Florida once and did not start playing organized football until his sophomore year at Glades Central.

In 2009, playing alongside Division I signees Greg Dent and Demetrius Evans, Benjamin caught 24 passes for 606 yards and four touchdowns. He was second-team all-area.
