Spring Football Tour (video): Cardinal Newman’s rebuilding project progresses

By Jason Lieser

Note: Welcome to the PBGametime 2010 Spring Football Tour! Over the next two weeks, we’ll visit area teams, meet some of the top players and answer the most pressing questions. Today’s stop is Cardinal Newman, where coach Steve Walsh and the Crusaders hope to take a big step forward.

It has been a rough couple of years for Cardinal Newman, but coach Steve Walsh took this job with an eye on competing for a playoff berth in 2011.

Could Cardinal Newman be a year ahead of that projection? Not likely. But it would be a good sign if the Crusaders go 5-5 this year.

Cardinal Newman went 24-26 in the five seasons leading up to Walsh’s hiring, including a 2-8 mark in 2008. The team went 3-7 in 2009, but that includes a victory over Pahokee due to forfeit.

Some of Cardinal Newman’s defeats look correctable. The Crusaders lost to Suncoast by 7, Benjamin by 13, Fort Lauderdale-Pine Crest by 8 and Inlet Grove by 1.

To pick up a post-season berth, the Crusaders will have to beat out at least two of these three quality teams in District 7-2B: Pahokee, North Broward Prep and Fort Lauderdale-University.

One player to watch in Cardinal Newman’s spring game (next Friday, 7 p.m. at Pope John Paul II) is running back Troy Campana. Campana led the team with 552 rushing yards and eight touchdowns last season. Also keep an eye on two-way lineman Trey Tucker.
