Palm Beach Lakes has been a program on the rise the past two seasons, but this year the Rams have to figure out a way to replace the heart of their defense.
Defensive linemen Dexter Richardson and Morris Moore are gone and those two accounted for 32 sacks last season.
Johnnie Simon, one of the area’s best overall players, also leaves behind a major void at safety and linebacker. Simon had 87 tackles and two interceptions last year.
Palm Beach Lakes went 7-4 last year and, with the exception of a 41-0 loss to Dwyer, the Rams’ defense carried them.
They held Boca Raton, Atlantic and Pahokee to 21 points or fewer each and allowed an average of 15.2 points per game.
The Rams also need to replace their leading passer (Cody Bonea) and rusher (Juan O’Farrill) from last season.
One player to keep an eye on in next Friday’s spring game is safety Tommy Lee Lewis. He will also play receiver, but is one of the players expected to lead the defense in 2010.
Palm Beach Lakes is unlikely to catch Dwyer this year, but another seven-win season certainly is realistic and the Rams should easily make the playoffs in a three-team district.
