Glades Central football dispatched Tampa-Jefferson 55-45 to defend its NFL National 7-on-7 title July 11 in Tampa.

The Raiders, who represented the Miami Dolphins in the competition, won nine games during the weekend en route to its second consecutive title.

Coach Jessie Hester said his young team rallied behind its quarterback, Jamarious Rowley, who will play his first season at the helm of the offense in the fall.

“All the focus was on the kids coming in being one of the favorites to win,” Hester said. “They had a lot to live up to, and they stepped up and accepted that challenge and did very well.

“It gives the kids some confidence, knowing that they can compete at a high level.”

The competition brought together 264 high school players from around the country who participated in the NFL High School Player Development Program this summer. They did a community service project Friday, and competition got underway Saturday and Sunday. — Toni-Ann Miller
