Cardinal Newman picks up two transfer quarterbacks

By Matt Porter

There’s a rack of brand-new compression fit Nike jerseys hanging in Cardinal Newman coach Steve Walsh’s office. Royal blue, yellow striping. Spotless.

In a few weeks, Walsh will hand No. 4 to a player he knows well.

Junior quarterback Brett Benes, who spent his sophomore year backing up Eddie Sullivan at Boca Raton, transferred to Cardinal Newman. He’ll likely start for the Crusaders, who went 3-7 last season (one of those wins came against Pahokee, via forfeit).

Walsh was a University of Miami classmate of Brett’s dad, Edgar Benes, the team’s starting kicker in 1988-’89.

Junior QB Will Clark also transferred to Cardinal Newman; he comes from Jupiter, where junior Tyler Cameron returns under center.

For Boca Raton, sophomore Kevin Anderson will likely start. Anderson started last year for Boca’s junior varsity team.

The Bobcats’ other option: senior wide receiver Cameron Lewis, a backup at American Heritage before he transferred to Boca as a sophomore. Don’t expect Lewis to take many snaps, since he should be a featured receiver for the Bobcats.
