Dwyer highly ranked in preseason prep football polls

By Jeff Greer

Call 2010 the season of great expectations for Dwyer.

After capturing the Class 4A state title in 2009, Dwyer pushed its way into the discussion as one of the best high school programs in the nation. This year, armed with three big-time BCS recruits in returning seniors Jacoby Brissett, Curt Maggitt and Nick O’Leary, the pundits think this year’s team is just as good.

ESPN Rise ranked Dwyer 14th in the nation in its preseason high school football poll while the National Prep Football Poll had Dwyer even higher at No. 6. The USA Today poll will be officially released on Aug. 19.

Tampa’s Plant High, St. Thomas Aquinas and Manatee (Bradenton) were the only other Florida schools represented in both polls. Miami Northwestern was No. 8 in the ESPN Rise rankings but unranked by the National Prep Poll. Aside from Dwyer, Plant is the only defending Florida state champ — the Panthers won the Class 5A crown — in the rankings.

Dwyer plays another consensus top 25 team in Cleveland’s Glenville High on Sept. 6 at Ohio State’s Ohio Stadium in Columbus. That game will be televised live on ESPN. Kickoff’s at noon.
