Former Dwyer basketball star Ramon Galloway on the rise at South Carolina

By Matt Porter

Good friend Jason Lieser, who now makes his home at Gator Bytes, has a nice item on Ramon Galloway, the former Dwyer hoops star who is proving his critics wrong.

In 2008, his senior season, Galloway led Dwyer to a 22-8 record to an appearance in the Class 5A final four. However, many thought he needed to fill out his game and his frame before he’d make an impact at South Carolina.

Galloway didn’t feel like waiting.

As a true freshman last season, Galloway played every game and got six starts. Gamecocks coach Darrin Horn said Galloway basically was the sixth man.

He averaged 7.8 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 21.5 minutes per game.

Horn initially recruited Galloway to play at Western Kentucky before the Gamecocks hired him to replace Dave Odom. When Horn jumped from mid-major to the SEC, he believed Galloway could do the same.

“At Western Kentucky, our deal was simple: we were going to go after guys that we thought should be playing in the SEC,” Horn said. “We thought he was one of those guys, so we started recruiting him that year. We thought he was that good from the get-go.”
