Dwyer’s Curt Maggitt (ankle) held out of practice

By Matt Porter

The Class 4A defending champions opened the second of two Monday practices without one of their top players.

Defensive end Curt Maggitt sprained his ankle during the morning session and is expected to miss a practice or two, coach Jack Daniels said.

Maggitt, the No. 1 prospect on the Big Board, stepped on a ball after stripping a quarterback during a drill. He was on crutches during the afternoon session.

The senior spent the offseason recovering from Jan. 29 surgery on his left shoulder. That injury, a torn labrum, caused him to miss spring practice.

Maggitt sees both sides

Maggitt’s absence, however long it lasts, means the Panthers won’t be able to work him into his new role: big target for quarterback Jacoby Brissett.

A defense-only player his entire football career — from pee-wees to high school varsity — Maggitt was to be employed as a block-first tight end in some of Daniels’ formations, lining up next to regular tight end Nick O’Leary.

Maggitt said while he hasn’t played on the offensive side of the ball, he’d have no trouble picking up the Panthers’ attack.

“I know it well already, just from seeing it every day. I just gotta get in better shape to play both ways,” said the 6-foot-4, 210-pound Maggitt, who runs a 4.6 40-yard dash.

Calling Maggitt one of the smartest players on his team, Daniels the senior has a good understanding of the offense and will slot in just fine. “He’s real intelligent,” he said. “I have no problem putting him out there.”
