Pahokee’s Pernell McPhee racks up preseason football nominations

By Jeff Greer

Former Pahokee standout Pernell McPhee is enjoying a nice preseason at Mississippi State. With the season still a few weeks away, the rising senior is on two national award preseason watch lists, and he’s caught the eye of SEC coaches, too.

You can find McPhee’s name on both the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Ted Hendricks Award watch lists this year. The Bednarik Award is given to the nation’s top defensive player; the Hendricks Award goes to the top defensive end in the country.

In addition to those nominations, the SEC coaches nominated McPhee (6-4, 285) for the preseason All-SEC second team. With new co-defensive coordinators at Mississippi State who love to blitz and rush the quarterback, McPhee has a great chance to pad some stats.

McPhee made the Florida Sports Writers Association’s all-state team in 2006 — his senior year — after leading the Blue Devils to a 14-0 record and a state title. He recorded a team-high 13.5 sacks that season and made the Palm Beach Post’s first-team defense.
