They might have missed the boat on this one.
USA Today’s preseason top 25 poll came out today, and the national newspaper has Glades Central ranked as the No. 21 high school team in the country.
Dwyer, returning six starters from a state championship team, didn’t crack the list.
Not saying either team deserves or does not deserve a top 25 national ranking. But Dwyer’s omission brings up a point of debate.
The Panthers return three nationally ranked seniors, Nick O’Leary, Jacoby Brissett and Curt Maggitt, plus Division 1 talents Darrell Hunter, Keith Bowers and Leroy Kelson. They have one of the more intelligent coaching staffs in the area.
And since they won so many games handily last year, the second unit gained valuable experience.
Similar things could be said about Glades Central, of course. Here’s USA Today’s take on the Raiders:
New QB Jamarious Rowley has plent of good receivers to throw to, led by Kelvin Benjamin, Neville Brown and Davonte Allen. LB Robert Way is the top returnee on defense. DB Jonathan Brockman was a standout in the national 7-on-7 tournament won by the Raiders. LB Jatavis Brown is another standout.
Glades Central holds the edge right now, beating Dwyer 30-18 in the Heath Evans 7-on-7 tournament in June. Glades Central has won the last two in-season matchups — a four-OT, 6-0 win in 2008, and a 21-7 win last year. The teams don’t play each other this year.
Entering the season, who do you think is better?
By the way, our top 25 teams and district rankings, plus top 25 recruits, top five players at every position and more, will be out Sept. 2.
