By Matt Porter
It’s not like tonight’s games matter, or anything.
(That is clearly not true. Of course they matter.)
The standings will look the same tomorrow morning, but it’s still worth showing up to see how the teams look. No coach will show every wrinkle in the playbook, but he might draw up a few new plays after tonight. Tons of underclassmen are trying to be noticed.
Perhaps most importantly, it’s the first real night of high school football this season. It’s time to get back in the stands and yell, scream, talk about your team and everything else that makes high school sports fun.
Speaking of fun, we need to tell you something. For everyone who is sending us messages on Twitter and leaving comments in the forum and on the blog about Game of the Week, hear this:
Game of the Week returns Thursday. We also have a new show coming. Stay tuned. (A note of thanks to everyone who has been patient as Jeff and I get up and running.)
All these games could become battles of the freshmen after the second quarter, rendering these picks irrelevant. For that reason, Jeff and I are 0-0 after tonight, just like the teams.
Tell us what you think in the comments below. And remember, if we pick against your team, it ain’t personal.
Onto the picks:
Jeff: I’ll be at Pahokee-Jupiter Christian on Friday night in Pahokee. I expect Pahokee to take care of business at home, 35-28.
Matt: Friday, I’m at West Boca-Seminole Ridge. Strong defense at West Boca, stronger defense at Seminole Ridge. Hawks, 21-6.
Jeff: How about Lake Worth at Olympic Heights? Lake Worth has some kids who can play, but I like Olympic Heights at home. Coach Mitch Henghold has 17 returning starters and little game-changer with a big heart in Tavon Jenkins. I like the Lions at home, 20-13.
Matt: Jupiter at Wellington. Two big schools, both should take a big step forward this year. I want to see how the Warriors are adjusting to the spread offense. I’ll take Jupiter, 24-14.
Jeff: John I. Leonard will be first victim in the new swamp at Palm Beach Gardens. I like the Gators, 28-14.
Matt: Santaluces at Park Vista. Good game, but I think the Cobras take this one, 35-22. (Cobra Haters: you may throw tomatoes at me now.)
Jeff: I love the size the Fort Pierce Central has with Giorgio Newberry and Mike Marseille, and I think FPC beats Okeechobee, 35-0.
Matt: Cardinal Newman at Boynton Beach has two players adjusting to new roles. Transfer QB Brett Benes assumes Newman’s starting job. Boynton Beach’s Johnathan Harris shifts to the opposite DE spot in Rick Swain’s 3-5 defense. I think the Tigers roll, 22-10.
Jeff: Atlantic has a ton of weapons, but the Eagles also have a tall task in traveling to Miami to play Booker T. Washington. I like the speed Atlantic has on defense, so I’ll stick with the 561 and say Atlantic wins, 28-14.
Matt: Hollywood Hills at Boca Raton. Hollywood Hills loses a lot from the team that lost to Dwyer in the 4A quarterfinals, but they have nice sophomores like LB Griffin Goins and RB Jeffrey Leavine. Despite the questions Boca has, I think they have more size and skill. Bobcats, 30-21.
Jeff: Everyone in the T Coast says Vero Beach is the toughest place to play in that area, so I’ll take Vero over Jensen Beach, 28-21.
